Hofstra Drops Heartbreaker To Top-Seeded Charleston At CAA Championship

Wilmington, NC - Hofstra took a 7-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning before top-seeded Charleston rallied to tie the game and then won on a game-ending single by Cole Singsank in the bottom of the ninth for an 8-7 victory in the second round of the Coastal Athletic Association Championship Thursday at Brooks Field. The Cougars advance in the winners bracket, while Hofstra will play No. 5 William & Mary in an elimination game Friday morning.

The Pride dropped to 24-32 on the season with the loss. Charleston improved to 40-12 on the year.

Hofstra took a 1-0 lead in the first with three singles. Dylan Palmer led off the game with a flare to left, Will Kennedy followed with a single up the middle to put runners on first and second. Charleston recorded two consecutive outs before Santino Rosso lined an opposite field single to left to score Palmer.

The Pride would score four times in the fifth to extend the lead to 5-0. Michael Florides led off with a single and went to second on a sacrifice. Kennedy reached on an infield single with Florides coming home and scoring on an error. Alex McCoy singled to put runners on the corners and came in on a two-run single from Steve Harrington. After an out and a walk, Penn Sealey singled in the Pride's fifth run.

Charleston put a dent in the Hofstra lead in the bottom of the sixth as Cole Mathis doubled home Will Baumhofer. But freshman Joseph Curreri came on in relief of Carlos Martinez with runners on the corners and two outs to record the third out with no further damage.

Sealey made it a 7-1 game with a two-run double in the top of the seventh, but the Cougars got all the way back in the bottom of the inning. Three straight singles started the inning and resulted in a run before Avery Neaves cleared the bases with a three-run home run to make it 7-5. Russell Hunter came on in relief of Curreri and after a one-out walk, Singsank reached on an infield single that was played into a two-base error to allow a run to score and him to reach third. Trotter Harlan then tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right.

In the bottom of the ninth, with Hofstra closer Mike McKenna (1-2) in his second inning of relief and fourth in two days, Mathis drew a two-out walk and stole second. Singsank followed with a base hit through the left side of the infield and a sliding Mathis beat the throw to the plate with the winning run.

Five Hofstra players - Kennedy, Palmer, Sealey, Harrington, and Florides - each had multiple hits with Kennedy leading the way with three. Sealey had three RBIs on the afternoon, while Harrington knocked in a pair of runs.
