Pelcher's Four Hits Lead 17-Hit Outburst In Win Over Northeastern

Wilmington, NC - Sixth-seeded Hofstra banged out 17 hits, led by Matt Pelcher's four, and scored multiple runs in five of nine innings to post a 12-9 victory over third-seeded Northeastern in the first round of the Coastal Athletic Association Baseball Championship at Brooks Field on the campus of UNCW Wednesday night. The victory moves the Pride into the winners bracket, where it will face top-seeded Charleston Thursday at 3 p.m.

Hofstra improved to 24-31 with the win, while the Huskies dropped to 38-16.

Hofstra got on the board first as Dylan Palmer led off with an infield single and went to third on an infield single from Alex McCoy. Steve Harrington followed with a single to score Palmer and send McCoy to third. A groundout from Santino Rosso delivered the second run before the Huskies escaped the inning.

Northeastern answered in the bottom of the first, putting runners on first and second before a double to the right field corner by Jack Doyle tied the game. Mike Sirota would give the Huskies a 4-2 lead in the second with a two-run single. Hofstra answered in the third inning as McCoy led off with a single and Harrington followed with a no-doubt home run over the right field fence to tie the score at four.

The score remained that way until the fifth when Hofstra scored three runs to take a 7-4 lead. The Pride loaded the bases before Pelcher dumped a single into center to drive in one. Michael Florides forced in a run when he was hit by a pitch, and Dylan Palmer capped the scoring with an RBI fielder's choice.  The Huskies got a run back in the bottom of the inning before Hofstra added three more in the seventh. Penn Sealey had a two-run double and Pelcher added another RBI single for a 10-5 lead.

The Huskies got a leadoff home run from Cam Maldonado in the bottom of the sixth and then tacked on three more runs in the seventh, two on another home run from Maldonado, to make it a 10-9 game. Northeastern left the bases loaded in the inning.

Pelcher would add an RBI double in the eighth inning and Florides followed with an RBI single to give the Pride some insurance and Mike McKenna retired the side in order in both the eighth and ninth innings to notch his 11ths save.

Michael O'Hanlon (7-4) picked up the win after going the first 6 ⅓ innings. The senior righty gutted through a 104-pitch performance, allowing seven runs on nine hits. Russell Hunter went a third of an inning before McKenna came on and got the final seven outs.

In addition to Pelcher's four hits and three RBIs, Hofstra received three hits and an RBI from Palmer, three hits and three runs from McCoy, three hits, three RBIs, and two runs from Harrington, and two hits, two runs and an RBI from Rosso. Florides and Sealey each had one hit and two RBIs.

Dennis Colleran (1-2), the second of six Northeastern pitchers, took the loss after allowing three runs over two innings of work. Maldonado paced the Huskies offense with three hits and three RBIs.
