Hofstra Concludes Regular Season With Loss To Monmouth

Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra University baseball team closed out the 2024 regular season with a 30-3 Coastal Athletic Association loss to Monmouth Saturday at University Field.

The Hawks jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two turns at bat and led 19-3 going into the ninth inning before scoring 11 times in the frame. The Hawks hit four home runs in the game and every starter but one had at least one hit. Phil Stahl and Chris Andrews each homered and drove in four runs. Stahl had three hits and four runs on the day, while Andrews had two hits and two runs scored. Austin Denlinger had three doubles, was hit by three pitches and scored six runs in the game. 

Monmouth starter Kevin Opanel (3-5) earned the win after allowing two runs on five hits over six innings of work. 

Hofstra starter Penn Sealey (0-5) took the loss after allowing five runs on two hits in ⅔ of an inning. He did have a better day at the plate with a double, a single and two RBIs. Nick LoBello accounted for the third Hofstra run with an RBI single. 

Prior to the game, Hofstra recognized its 14 seniors and graduate students - Mike Dorcean, Michael Florides, Steve Harrington, Cade Henry, Steven Kaenzig, Danny Kelleher, Will Kennedy, Mike McKenna, Tristan Nemjo, Michael O'Hanlon, Matt Pelcher, Santino Rosso, Ryan Rue, and Penn Sealey - who were playing their final home game.

Hofstra will be back in action Wednesday at the CAA Baseball Championship Wednesday at UNCW. The Pride will be the No. 6 seed and will face No. 3 Northeastern at 4 p.m.

-Hofstra is 9-11-1 all-time against Monmouth.
-The 30 runs by Monmouth ties the record for runs scored by an opponent (Delaware, 1991)
-Hofstra utilized 11 pitchers, including four in the ninth inning.
-11 of Monmouth's 19 hits were extra-base hits.
