Hofstra Holds Off Monmouth To Win CAA Series

Hempstead, NY - Luke Masiuk delivered a two-run single in the sixth inning to snap a 1-1 tie and Matt pelcher added an insurance run in the seventh with an RBI single as Hofstra held off a late Monmouth rally for a 4-3 victory Friday at University Field. The victory clinched the Coastal Athletic Association series and put the Pride one step closer to clinching a conference championship berth.

Hofstra improved to 23-30 overall and 13-13 in the CAA with its second consecutive win. The Hawks dropped to 17-30 overall and 10-16 in league play.

The team traded runs in the fifth inning with Joey Ventresca doubling in the Monmouth run, while Penn Sealey scored for Hofstra after leading off with a double, moving to third on a sacrifice and scoring on a wild pitch.

In the sixth, Will Kennedy and Alex McCoy started the inning with back to back singles. After a sacrifice bunt and a strikeout, Masiuk laced a single to center to knock in both runs for a 3-1 lead. In the seventh inning, Sealey led off with his second double of the game and Pelcher followed by slashing a single to right after showing bunt.

The Hawks got a run in the eighth and another in the ninth, but Mike McKenna induced a game-ending 6-3 double play to pick up his single-season record 10th save of the season. Carlos Martinez (6-4) earned the win after allowing one run on four hits over six innings. The sophomore righty struck out six batters.

Sealey and McCoy each had two hits for the Pride with Sealey also scoring two runs.
