Kennedy's Five RBIs Power Hofstra Past Monmouth

Hempstead, NY - Will Kennedy's three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning snapped a 3-3 tie and capped off a five RBI day for the graduate outfielder as Hofstra defeated Monmouth, 7-3, in the opening game of a three-game Coastal Athletic Association series. Michael O'Hanlon overcame a tough first inning to hold the Hawks in check through eight innings.

The win kept Hofstra's CAA Championship hopes alive as the Pride improved to 22-30 overall and 12-13 in league play with the victory. Monmouth slipped to 17-29 overall and 10-15 in the CAA with the loss.

The Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first with Austin Denlinger delivering an RBI double and Phil Stahl an RBI single in a 24-pitch inning. The Pride defense limited the damage with an inning ending double play. O'Hanlon would settle down and limited the Hawks to just one hit over the next seven innings, a solo home run from James Harmstead in the sixth.

The Pride offense got going in the third when Matt Pelcher flared a single into right field and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. After Dylan Palmer was hit by a pitch, Kennedy laced a double into the right field corner that scored both runs for a 2-2 tie. Penn Sealey gave the Pride the lead in the fourth with a solo home run, his third of the season.

The score remained that way until Harmstead tied it for Monmouth with his seventh home run of the season, a two-out shot to left field. Hofstra broke the tie in a big way in the seventh as Michael Florides and Palmer had back-to-back singles in front of Kennedy, who took a 2-2 offering from Monmouth starter Drew Helmstetter over the fence in left center for a 6-3 Pride lead. It was Kennedy's second home run of the season. Hofstra would add a fourth run in the inning on Santino Rosso's two-out single up the middle that scored Alex McCoy

Kennedy finished the day 2-5, while Palmer was 3-3 with a pair of runs scored. Rosso, Sealey, and Pelcher also had two-hit games for the Pride. O'Hanlon improved to 6-4 on the season, allowing three runs on four hits over eight innings. The senior right-hander struck out four.

Helmstetter (2-5) took the loss for Monmouth after allowing seven runs on 12 hits over 6 ⅔ innings of work. Harmstead had two of the Hawks five hits with a double to go along with the home run.

The series continues Friday with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
