Hofstra Drops Series Opener At UNCW

Wilmington, NC - UNCW hit four home runs and Jacob Shafer scattered five hits over seven innings as the Seahawks picked up a 13-3 victory over Hofstra Friday in a Coastal Athletic Association game at Brooks Field. Dylan Palmer had three hits for the Pride. 

Hofstra dropped to 20-29 overall and 10-12 in the CAA with the loss. The Seahawks won for the seventh consecutive time and improved to 34-16 overall and 18-4 in league play. 

The Seahawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first courtesy of a Trevor Marsh two-run home run. UNCW tacked on a run in the second on a sacrifice fly from Kevin Jones. The Seahawks would bust the game open in the third with five runs. Tanner Thach hit a solo home run, while Alec DeMartino followed two batters later with a two-run shot. Jones would add two more RBIs, and cap the third inning scoring, with a single up the middle. Bryan Arendt added a solo home run in the fifth to extend the UNCW lead to 9-0. 

Hofstra would get on the board in the sixth as Palmer led off with a triple and came in on a groundout from Santino Rosso. After a walk to Steve Harrington, Will Kennedy doubled to make it a 9-2 game. 

UNCW would add single runs in the sixth and seventh innings for an 11-2 advantage. Luke Masiuk singled in the Pride's third run in the eighth, before the Seahawks closed the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the eighth. 

Thach, Marsh, DeMartino, and Brock Wills each had two hits to pace the UNCW offense. Jones led the Seahawks with three RBIs. Shafer (4-5) allowed two runs over his seven frames and struck out four. 

Michael O'Hanlon (5-4) took the loss for Hofstra, allowing eight runs (7 earned) on seven hits over 2 ⅔ innings of work. 

The teams resume the series Saturday at 6 p.m..

Notes:
-Palmer's three-hit game was his eighth of the season.
-Palmer also stole his 21st base of the season.
-Harrington extended his hitting streak to eight games with a fourth-inning single.
-Hofstra is 17-42 all-time against UNCW.
