Hofstra Drops Series Finale To Delaware

Hempstead, NY - Joey Loynd homered and drove in three runs, while Andrew Amato had a two run single to back 6 ⅔ innings of shutout relief from Tyler Strechay as Delaware defeated Hofstra, 8-1, Sunday afternoon at University Field to clinch the Coastal Athletic Association series between the two teams.

Hofstra slipped to 11-19 overall and 3-6 in the CAA with the loss. Delaware improved to 15-14 overall and 5-4 in league play.

After Hofstra scored in the second inning on a wild pitch, the Blue Hens answered with a three-run third to take the lead. Delaware loaded the bases and Loynd was hit by a pitch to force in the first run. Amato followed with a two-run single that put the Blue Hens on top to stay. All three runs were unearned for starter Steven Kaenzig (0-5) as an error prolonged the inning.

Loynd would hit a two-run home run off Kaenzig in the fifth to make it a 5-1 game and Delaware would tack on a run in the seventh on Eric Ludman's sacrifice fly and two in the eighth on RBI singles from Aaron Graeber and Brett Lesher.

Stretchay (1-0) relieved starter Dom Velasquez with one out in the first inning and allowed just five hits and two walks over the next 6 2⁄3 innings. He also struck out five batters. Velasquez was making his first start in two seasons after missing time due to arm surgery.

Steve Harrington went 3-4 with a double for the Pride, while Penn Sealey was 2-3. Kaenzig was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs (two earned) on five hits over 4 ⅔ innings. He did strike out six batters, tying his season and career-high.

The Pride returns to action Wednesday with a road game at FDU at 3 p.m.
