Rosso's Walkoff Single Lifts Hofstra Over Delaware In 11 Innings

Hempstead, NY - Santino Rosso's 11th inning single brought home pinch runner Mike Sweeney with the game-winning run as Hofstra picked up a 5-4 victory over Delaware Saturday afternoon at University Field. The Blue Hens forced extra innings with a three-run ninth inning. The win evened the Coastal Athletic Association series at one game apiece.

Hofstra moved to 11-18 overall and 3-5 in the CAA with the win, while the Blue Hens saw their record even at 14-14 overall and 4-4 in league action.

The Pride scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 2-0 lead. In the fifth, Will Kennedy drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on a double by Penn Sealey. Matt Pelcher followed with a sacrifice fly for the first Hofstra run. The Pride would stage a two-out rally in the sixth as two singles sandwiched around a walk loaded the bases and Sealey delivered a run-scoring single to double the lead.

Delaware got a run back in the seventh, loading the bases with no outs. Reliever Russell Hunter came on and allowed a run scoring fielder's choice before escaping without any further damage.

A two-run eighth that featured an RBI triple from Steve Harrington and an RBI double from Kennedy gave the Pride a 4-1 lead going into the ninth with closer Mike McKenna coming on to attempt to close out the game. But Delaware touched him up for three runs to tie the score at four.

In the Delaware 10th, Hofstra reliever Ryan McLaughlin (1-0) allowed a one-out double to Andrew Amato before striking out the next two batters to escape the threat. Hofstra would get a leadoff single from Harrington in the bottom of the inning but stranded him at first. McLaughlin hit the first batter he faced in the 11th but retired the next two batters and then got a great throw to second from Matt Pelcher to cut down a stolen base attempt for the third out.

Pelcher led off the bottom of the inning with a single and was pinch run for by Sweeney. Michael Florides put down a sacrifice bunt and the Blue Hens chose to walk Dylan Palmer intentionally and bring in Carter Welch to face Rosso. Welch's first pitch went to the backstop, advancing both runners and, and Rosso took his second offering to right field for a single to drive in the winning run.

McLaughlin earned his first career win with two innings of  one-hit ball with three strikeouts Harrington finished the game with four hits, while Palmer, Kennedy, and Sealey each had two hits.
