Hempstead, NY - Hofstra banged out 20 hits, including three home runs, as the Pride clinched their Coastal Athletic Association series with a 14-4 victory over North Carolina A&T Saturday at University Field. The series win is Hofstra's second in as many weeks.
The Pride improved to 16-27 overall and 7-10 in the CAA with the win, while the Aggies saw their record slip to 21-21 overall and 5-12 in league play.
After Hofstra jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second, the Aggies tied the game with three in the top of the third. From that point on it was all Hofstra. Santino Rosso hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth to break the tie and give the Pride the lead for good. Hofstra would erupt for six runs in the sixth with Alex McCoy blasting a three-run home run, his 10th of the season, and Penn Sealey slamming a two-run shot for his first round-tripper of his career. That made it a 10-3 game.
Dom Camera's RBI single in the seventh gave the Pride an eight-run advantage, 11-3, and after North Carolina A&T pushed a run across in the eighth, the Pride answered with three of their own. Rosso led off the inning with a home run, his ninth of the season, and
Will Kennedy and Sealey would add RBI singles later in the frame.
While the Hofstra bats were scorching, the Pride pitching was equally hot. Carlos Martinez (3-4) allowed four hits and three unearned runs over seven innings with seven strikeouts to get the win. Ryan McLaughlin gave up an unearned run on no hits in one inning, while Danny Kelleher worked around a single in the ninth.
Canyon Brown had two of the Aggies five hits on the day. Starter Angel Ortiz (2-3) allowed four runs on seven hits in four innings of work and was tagged with the loss.
