NJIT Pulls Away From Hofstra In Middle Innings

Little Falls, NJ - The Highlanders of NJIT scored 16 runs in the middle innings to erase a 5-1 deficit and went on to post a 19-7 victory Tuesday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.

Hofstra dropped to 14-26 with the loss, while NJIT improved to 16-20 with the win.

The Pride started strong, scoring three times in the first inning. Dylan Palmer led off with a single and after a fly out, Rosso sent the first pitch he saw into the trees beyond the right field fence for a two-run home run. Hofstra would load the bases and Joseph Mennella knocked in the third run with a run-scoring single.

Hofstra would tack on a run in the second as Mike Dorcean was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and went to second on Palmer's second single of the evening. Michael Florides followed with a double down the left field line that plated Dorcean.

NJIT got on the board in the bottom of the second on Ty Sallie's sacrifice fly, which followed a single from Cole Campbell and a double by AJ Soldra.

The Pride loaded the bases again in the fourth and produced a run on Alex McCoy's sacrifice fly to take a 5-1 lead. The Highlanders made some noise in the bottom of the inning as Soldra tripled and came in to score on an infield error. NJIT would put two runners in scoring position and Cade Ladehoff brought them in with a double to right to make it a 5-4 ballgame. Albert Choi then hit a double that scored Ladehoff with the tying run.

Palmer drove in Mike Sweeney with a fifth inning single to put the Pride back on top, 6-5. The lead was short-lived as Ray Ortiz led off the NJIT half with a solo home run and Sallie would later double in Soldra to give the Highlanders their first lead of the night at 7-6. Austin Francis followed with a triple to knock in Sallie for an 8-6 lead. Ladehoff would add a run-scoring single to up the NJIT lead to three runs, 9-6.

The Highlanders scored eight more runs in the sixth to lead 17-6. Campbell had a two-run home run, Francis a sacrifice fly, and Ladehoff an RBI single. Luke Longo capped the scoring with a grand slam to left field.
