Florides, Mennella Spark Offense In Win At Marist

Poughkeepsie, NY - Joseph Mennella homered for the second consecutive game, a two-run shot, and Michael Florides drove in three runs as Hofstra picked up an 8-6 victory Wednesday over Marist at McCann Baseball Field. The Pride had a four-run fifth inning to open a 7-1 lead and held off a Marist comeback attempt.

Hofstra snapped a six-game losing streak and moved to 12 24 on the season. Marist dropped to 12-23 with the loss.

The Pride picked up a run in the third as a two-out infield error allowed Mike Sweeney to score from third. Mennella extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth, sending a 1-2 pitch over the center field wall for his second home run of the season.

In the fifth, Luke Masiuk scored the Pride's fourth run on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Florides delivered a two-run single and would then come in to score on a single from Dylan Palmer.

The Red Foxes chipped away with runs in the fourth and fifth, and two in the sixth to pull within three at 7-4. But Florides drove in Mennella with a single in the eighth to extend the lead to 8-4.

Marist would pick up two runs in the bottom of the eighth on Lewis Rodriguez' two-run single and had the tying run at the plate in the ninth. But Joseph Curreri worked around the runner to escape unscathed and close out the win and earn his first save.

Florides had three hits on the day, while Mennella also added a double for his second two-hit game in a row. In a scheduled bullpen day, Hofstra starter Tanner Sanderoff (1-0) notched his first career win with three scoreless innings. The freshman, who was making his first career start, did not allow a hit and struck out three.

Chris Ubner (0-1) took the loss for Marist after allowing an unearned run on one hit over three innings.

Hofstra returns to action Friday when it welcomes Campbell to University Field in the first game of a CAA series. First pitch is at 2 p.m.
