Hofstra Suffers One Run Loss At Elon

Elon, NC - Elon's Justin Mitrovich allowed a run on three hits over seven innings and Ben Sieracki followed with two hit-less innings for the save as the Phoenix posted a 2-1 victory over Hofstra at Latham Park. The win clinched the CAA series for Elon.

Hofstra dropped to 11-22 overall and 3-8 in the CAA with the loss. Elon improves to 13-21 overall and 3-8 in league play.

The Phoenix scored their first run in the third inning on an unorthodox two-base sacrifice fly. After back-to-back walks put runners on first and second, Charlie Granatell hit a fly ball to right field that was caught by Luke Masiuk. Both runners tagged up and Tank Yaghoubi was able to race home from second. Elon would get a second run in the sixth on Will Vergantino's two-out double that drove in Alex Duffey.

Hofstra would get on the board in the seventh on a solo home run from Alex McCoy. The Pride put runners in scoring position in the seventh, eighth, and ninth, but could not push the tying run across.

Carlos Martinez (2-4) started for the Pride and took the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits over 5 ⅔ innings. The sophomore right-hander walked five and struck out six. Mike McKenna kept the Phoenix off the board for the final 2 ⅓ innings, allowing three hits.

Mitrovich, who had six strikeouts, improved to 3-4 on the season. Sieracki earned his first save.

The teams conclude the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
