Hofstra Falls At Elon In Series Opener

Elon, NC - Matt Pelcher had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs but Elon put up two or more runs in five of the first six innings to post a 16-7 Coastal Athletic Association win over Hofstra Friday at Latham Park. 

Hofstra dipped to 11-21 overall and 3-7 in league play with the loss. Elon snapped a five-game losing streak to improve to 12-21 overall and 2-8 in CAA action. 

The Phoenix jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning behind an RBI single from Connor Offshack and an RBI double from Alex Duffey. Hofstra would tie the game in the second as back to back singles from Steve Harrington and Alex McCoy was followed by a Will Kennedy sacrifice fly and a run-scoring single from Pelcher. 

The Phoenix retook the lead in the bottom of the inning on Mallory's three-run home run and then added three more runs in the third to extend to an 8-2 lead. Mallory had a two-run double in the inning. 

Hofstra would get three runs back in the fourth on a two-run double from Pelcher and a run-scoring single from Michael Brown. Harrington made it a three-run game in the fifth with a RBI single that scored Luke Masiuk, who had led off with a double. 

Elon would pull away again with two runs in the fifth on Justin Szestowicki's home run and then added six more runs in the sixth, sending 12 men to the plate. 

McCoy his his seventh home run of the season for the Pride in the eighth, a solo shot to left that closed the scoring. 

Michael O'Hanlon (2-3) started and took the loss for the Pride, allowing eight runs in 2 ⅔ innings. 

Mallory led the Phoenix with four hits and six RBIs on the night. Szestowicki had two hits, three RBIs, and four runs scored. Sam Nomura (2-1), Elon's third pitcher of the night, was credited with the win after allowing one hit over two scoreless innings. 

The teams continue the series Saturday with a 4 p.m. start.

Notes:
-Dylan Palmer had three hits for the Pride.
-Position players Mike Sweeney and Michael Florides each pitched scoreless innings.
-Hofstra is 8-14 all-time against Elon.
-Harrington scored his 100th career run in the game.
