Hofstra Drops A Pair At St. John's

Queens, NY - The Hofstra University baseball team dropped a pair of games at St. John's Friday, losing a close first game of the doubleheader, 3-2, before falling 10-1 in game two. Hofstra moved to 4-8 with the losses, while St. John's is 7-4.

The opener was a solid pitching matchup between Hofstra's Michael O'Hanlon and the Red Storm's Xavier Kolhosser. O'Hanlon (0-1) took the loss after allowing three runs on nine hits over seven innings. The Pride senior struck out six batters. Kolhosser (3-1) went 6 1/3 innings and allowed a run on six hits.

Blake Mayberry did the most damage for the Red Storm as his fifth inning home run gave the home team a 2-1 lead and his RBI double in the seventh made it a 3-1 game. Hofstra got a run back in the eighth with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Penn Sealey that scored Luke Masiuk, who had led off the inning with a single and moved to third on a single from Matt Pelcher. The Pride did put the tying run on in the ninth, but he was erased on a caught stealing as Sam Mettert recorded two strikeouts in the inning to notch his third save.

Dylan Palmer drove in the first Hofstra run with a fielder's choice. Pelcher finished 3-4 on the day, while Masiuk and Santino Rosso each had a pair of hits.

In the nightcap, three St. John's pitchers limited the Pride to one run on five hits, while the Red Storm offense put up 10 runs. Anthony Brienza had a two-run single in the second that gave the home team all it would need. The Red Storm would score three more runs in the fourth on an RBI single, a sacrifice bunt and a throwing error to build a 5-0 lead.

Hofstra got its run in the fifth following a pair of walks, Sean Lane drove in Masiuk with a single through the left side.

Starter Steven Kaenzig (0-3) took the loss for Hofstra, allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits in five innings. He did record six strikeouts. Sealey had two hits for the Pride including a double.

Louis Marinaro (1-1) got the win with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

The teams will conclude the series Sunday with a 12 p.m. start. The day and time is rescheduled from Saturday's originally planned 2 p.m. start.
