Hofstra Drops One-Run Game At St. John's

Queens, NY - Hofstra scored at least one run in seven of nine innings, but it was not enough as St. John's picked up a 9-8 win Sunday to complete a three-game series sweep of the Pride at Jack Kaiser Stadium. Hofstra slipped to 4-9 with the loss, while the Red Storm moved to 8-4.

Hofstra battled from behind the whole game. The Pride cut a 2-0 deficit in half in the second on Penn Sealey's RBI single that plated Matt Pelcher. In the third inning, Santino Rosso hit a solo home run to make it a 4-2 game. Hofstra pulled within one, 5-4, in the fifth on Alex McCoy's solo home run before St. John's answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. A Rosso RBI single in the sixth, and an RBI single from Will Kennedy and a run-scoring groundout from Michael Brown in the seventh made it 8-7.

The Red Storm added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh to go ahead, 9-7. Hofstra scored a run in the eighth on Luke Masiuk's RBI single, but left the bases loaded before it could push across any more runs.

Jed Boyle came on in the ninth and worked around a two-out walk to get his second save. Starter Mario Pesca (1-0) earned the win for the Red Storm, allowing four runs on five hits over five innings. Ben Beauchamp had three hits, including a home run, to lead the St. John's offense.

The Pride received two-hit games from Rosso, McCoy, Masiuk, Pelcher, and Kennedy. Carlos Martinez (1-2) started and took the loss after allowing seven runs on eight hits in 4 ⅓ innings of work. He did record six strikeouts.

Hofstra returns to action Tuesday when it hosts FDU in the 2024 home opener at University Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Notes:
-Rosso hit his team-best fifth home run, which is a career high.
-The solo home run also gave him 100 career RBIs.
-McCoy hit his third home run of the season and extended his hitting streak to 13 games.
-Mike McKenna threw 1 ⅔ innings of hitless relief with three strikeouts.
