Outstanding Defensive Effort Leads Hofstra To Rout Of Wagner

Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra women's lacrosse team held Wagner to only two goals and the trio of Taylor Mennella (4), Kerry Walser (4), and Nikki Mennella (3) combined for 11 goals as the Pride earned a 17-2 win over Wagner on Tuesday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium. Walser and Taylor Mennella each finished with six points in the game, both adding a pair of assists, to lead Hofstra in scoring. Hofstra held Wagner scoreless for the first 46:55 of the contest. 

The win moved Hofstra's record to 2-3 this season, while Wagner dropped to 0-3. 

Hofstra led 4-0 after the first quarter and 11-0 at halftime as the Pride was never challenged in the contest. The Mennella sisters accounted for six of the Pride's first seven goals in the game with each tallying a hat trick with still more than 12 minutes left before halftime. 

Walser, who had two first half goals, scored Hofstra's first goal of the third quarter to complete her hat trick. Emily Weigand scored her first of the season later in the third quarter to push the lead to 14-0 and Kate Fiola finished the scoring for the Pride with her first of the season with just under two minutes left in the fourth quarter. 

Melissa Sconone had four points on two goals and two assists for Hofstra, while Lauren Lam added a goal and two assists. Trinity Reed posted four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers in the game and Christine Dannenfelser tallied two ground balls and two caused turnovers for the Pride. Luchianna Cardello allowed no goals in 45 minutes of action and made four saves. 

Madeleine Rudolph had a strong game with seven draw controls as Hofstra held a 15-8 advantage in that category. 

Nia Scott and Sophia Colver each had goals for Wagner. Bryn Brockstie made seven saves in net for the Seahawks. 

Hofstra is back in action on Friday when it travels to Marist for a 1 p.m. contest. 

NOTES
- Hofstra is 7-0 all-time against Wagner. The series started during the 2017 season and the teams have met every season since with the exception of the 2021 campaign. 
- Walser's six points marked a new career-high. She previously had five points on a pair of occasions, most recently against Wagner on March 7, 2023. 
- Nikki Mennella tied her career-high with four draw controls. She previously had four on a pair of occasions, most recently against Army West Point on March 4, 2023. 
- The seven draw controls by Rudolph were the first seven of her career.
