Martinez, Kennedy Lead Hofstra Past Towson

Towson, MD - Carlos Martinez struck out a career-best nine batters over seven innings and held the Tigers to one run on five hits, and Will Kennedy drove in three runs as Hofstra defeated Towson, 5-1, Saturday at Schuerholz Park. The win evened the Coastal Athletic Association series at one game apiece ahead of Sunday's finale. 

Hofstra moved to 10-16 overall and 2-3 in the CAA with the win, while Towson dropped to 6-20 overall and 1-4 in the CAA. 

The Pride took a 1-0 lead in the first inning behind an RBI single from Steve Harrington. Kennedy made it a 2-0 game in the third with a run-scoring single. After Elijah Dickerson hit a solo home run for Towson to cut the lead in half in the fourth, Kennedy answered with a two-run single in the fifth to give the Pride a 4-1 lead. Santino Rosso gave the Pride an insurance run in the ninth with an RBI single. 

Martinez (2-3), who also set a new career best in innings pitched, had at least one strikeout in each inning in an 85-pitch outing. Mike McKenna followed with two scoreless innings to earn his fourth save of the season. The graduate closer walked one and struck out three.

Towson starter Brett Seils (0-4) took the loss after allowing a pair of runs on six hits in three innings. 

Hofstra and Towson will conclude the series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.

Notes:
-Kennedy finished the day 3-4 with three singles and the three RBIs.
-Dylan Palmer and Harrington each had two-hit days, and Harrington scored a pair of runs..
-The Pride had 11 hits, all singles.
