Strong Pitching, Late Run Leads Hofstra Past Seton Hall

Hempstead, NY - Matt Pelcher's RBI groundout in the bottom of the eighth inning broke a 2-2 tie and gave Hofstra a 3-2 win over Seton Hall Tuesday afternoon at University Field. Hofstra pitching held the Pirates offense to five hits and issued just one walk, while striking out seven.

The Pride improved to 8-15 on the season with the win and stopped a two game losing streak. Seton Hall saw a two-game winning streak halted and slipped to 14-11.

Hofstra scored a run in the second, loading the bases on two singles and a walk before a passed ball allowed Steve Harrington to come in. The Pride doubled the lead in the fourth as Luke Masiuk led off with a walk, stole second, and came in on a double to right by Will Kennedy.

The Hofstra pitching tandem of starter Carlos Martinez and reliever Penn Sealey kept Seton Hall off the board for the first six innings. Martinez put in two innings without allowing a hit and struck out three. Sealey followed with four scoreless innings, allowing two hits with three strikeouts.

Seton Hall tied the game with two runs in the seventh off reliever Brian Hart. Danny Melnick drew a leadoff walk and came around on Staus Pokrovsky's double. After a single put runners on the corners, Hart got a double play grounder that allowed the tying run to score.

That set the stage for a Pride rally in the eighth as Alex McCoy led off with a walk. A wild pitch allowed him to move to second and Harrington followed with a grounder to first that moved McCoy to third. After Masiuk walked and stole second, the Pirates intentionally walked Kennedy to set up double play. However, Pelcher's grounder to third was too slow for a double play and allowed McCoy to score what proved to be the winning run.

Hofstra reliever Mike McKenna (1-0), who entered in the eighth, worked around a leadoff infield single in the ninth to retire the next three batters to secure the victory. McKenna allowed just one hit in his two innings.

Seton Hall reliever Nate Espelin (1-1) took the loss, allowing a run on no hits in 1 ⅓ innings of work.

Hofstra is back in action Wednesday when it hosts LIU at 3 p.m.
