Hofstra Splits CAA Doubleheader With Northeastern

Hempstead, NY - Michael O'Hanlon three six strong innings and Mike McKenna struck out five batters in three scoreless frames as Hofstra won game one of a Coastal Athletic Association doubleheader, 3-2, over Northeastern Friday at University Field. The Huskies, who were picked first in the preseason coaches poll, won game two, 13-9.

Hofstra moved to 7-14 overall and 1-1 in the CAA with the split. Northeastern is 15-6 overall and 1-1 in league play.

The teams scored all their game one offense in the first inning. Luke Beckstein led off the game with a single and Tyler MacGregor followed with a home run to put the Huskies on top, 2-0. Hofstra answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with one out before Luke Masiuk doubled in two runs to tie the game. Masiuk spent the first two years of his college career at Northeastern. Matt Pelcher followed with a sacrifice fly that gave the Pride a 3-2 lead.

O'Hanlon (2-1) settled in and allowed just three more hits over the next five innings to finish with a line of six hits over six innings with four strikeouts. McKenna came on for the final three innings and allowed a pair of hits with five strikeouts in earning his third save. Masiuk finished with two of the Pride's five hits, both doubles. 

Northeastern's Jake Gigliotti (2-1) threw four innings and allowed three runs on four hits. Jack Bowery threw the final four innings and allowed one hit with three strikeouts. 

In the second game, the offense was on display as the teams combined for 24 hits and 22 runs. The Huskies rallied from 3-1, 5-3, and 6-4 deficits to take an 8-6 lead in the sixth and a 13-6 lead in the seventh. Hofstra rallied with a three run seventh as Santino Rosso missed a grand slam by a matter of feet and settled for a three-run double off the wall in center field. 

Alex McCoy and Sean Lane each homered for the Pride, while Michael Florided had a two-run double. Dylan Palmer had four hits in the game.

Matt Haggerty (0-2) took the loss for Hofstra, allowing two hits and two runs in ⅔ of an inning. Cooper McGrath (2-0), the fourth Northeastern reliever, was the pitcher of record on the winning side. He allowed three unearned runs and four hits over three innings. 

The teams conclude the series Sunday with a single game at 12 p.m.

-Hofstra pitching hit 10 Northeastern batters in game two.
