Charleston, SC -
Tyler Thomas had 27 points and
Darlinstone Dubar added 19, but the Hofstra men's basketball team dropped an 87-76 decision to Charleston at TD Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The loss ends a four-game win streak for the Pride, which finished the regular season with a 19-12 overall record and a 12-6 CAA mark. Charleston improved to 24-7 and 15-3.
A 16-6 deficit faced the Pride just over four minutes into the contest before the Pride scored seven straight to close the gap to 16-13 with 14:04 left before halftime. Thomas had a pair of baskets during the run to allow Hofstra to trim the Cougar lead. Back-to-back baskets from
Jaquan Carlos made it a 31-26 game in favor of the home team later in the half but Charleston quickly pushed the lead back to 10 with three minutes and change remaining. The Cougars were able to take a nine-point lead into the intermission as they scored the final five points of the half.
The Charleston lead grew to as many as 18, 60-42, with 15:40 left in regulation before Hofstra slowly chipped away. Thomas had a personal 6-0 run later in the half that closed the gap to 65-54 with 12:10 to play. Later on, a Hofstra 7-0 run would make it a seven-point game, 70-63, following a three-pointer from
German Plotnikov with 9:44 left. That would be as close as the Pride would get, though, as the Cougars kept Hofstra at bay the remainder of the half to earn the win.
Carlos added 13 points and seven assists for the Pride, while
Jacco Fritz chipped in with 12 points, three rebounds, and three assists.
Reyne Smith led Charleston with 21 points and Ante Brzovic added 18.
Hofstra will next be in action at the CAA Championship beginning in the quarterfinals on Sunday, March 10. The full tournament bracket will be announced this evening.
