Long Ball Hurts Hofstra In Loss At Columbia

New York, NY - Dylan Palmer had four hits, including the 100th of his career, and two RBIs and Santino Rosso had three hits and two RBIs, but Columbia slugged five home runs in a 12-8 victory Tuesday at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.

Columbia snapped an eight-game losing streak with the win and moved to 4-11 on the season. Hofstra dropped to 6-12 with its third straight loss.

The Lions jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two innings thanks to the long ball. Cole Hage and Sam Miller had two run homers in a five-run first, and Jack Kail (solo) and Anton Lazitz (two-run) homered in the second inning.

The Pride chipped away, scoring a run in the third on an Alex McCoy double and then adding four runs in the fourth. Matt Pelcher and Michael Brown had back-to-back RBI doubles, while Palmer had an RBI single and then came in to score on a triple from Rosso. Hofstra would score a run in the sixth to get within two at 8-6.

Columbia used the long ball to its advantage once again in the sixth with Hage adding his second of the game, a solo shot, and Owen Estabrook hitting a two-run blast to extend to an 11-6 lead. Estabrook added a sac fly in the seventh for Columbia's 12th run.

Palmer and Rosso had RBI hits in the eighth to cap the scoring. The Pride would load the bases in the ninth with two outs but the Lions' Justin Bowman escaped unscathed.

Hofstra starter Penn Sealey (0-1) took the loss, allowing eight runs on 10 hits in two innings. Thomas Santana (1-0), who threw two innings of relief for the Lions, was credited with the win.

Hofstra returns to action Wednesday at Fordham with a 3 p.m. start time.

Notes:
-Palmer collected his 100th career hit in the top of the sixth with a single up the middle. He is the fastest player to 100 hits in program history, accomplishing the feat in his 64th game.

-Pelcher and Brown each had two hits

-Hofstra is 7-12-1 all-time versus Columbia.
