Big Inning Costs Hofstra In Loss To Manhattan

Hempstead, NY - Dylan Palmer hit his first career home run, but a 13-run fifth inning for Manhattan propelled the Jaspers to a 17-6 victory over Hofstra in game two of a three-game series Saturday at University Field. Hofstra dropped to 6-10 with the loss, while Manhattan moved to 5-12.

Hofstra took a 1-0 lead in the first as Luke Masiuk doubled home Palmer. Vincent Davis put the Jaspers ahead to stay in the fourth inning with a two-run home run. Manhattan would send 17 men to the plate in the fifth, scoring 13 runs against four Hofstra pitchers. The Jaspers would draw six walks and have five hits in the inning. Josiah Brown had a three-run home run and Dylan Mayer had a three-run double in the inning. 

In the bottom of the inning, following Mike Sweeney's first career hit, Palmer sent his first home run well over the right field fence to make it a 15-3 game. The Jaspers would get the runs back in the sixth before Hofstra tacked on two in the seventh on a pair of bases-loaded walks and one in the ninth on an RBI single from Nick Lobello, which was also his first career hit.

Steven Kaenzig (0-4) started and took the loss for Hofstra, allowing four runs on six hits in four-plus innings. Michael Staiano (2-0) went five innings for Manhattan, allowing three runs on six hits. 

Masiuk had three hits, including two doubles, for the Pride, while Palmer added two hits, two RBIs, and three runs scored. Lobello had two RBIs in the game. 

Brown, Daniel Perez, and Logan Pfannenbecker each had two hits for Manhattan. 

The teams conclude the series Sunday at 1 p.m.

Notes:
-Landon Friedman and Ryan McLaughlin each struck out the side in their one inning of relief.
-Hofstra issued 13 walks and hit a batter.
-Jake DesLaurier also threw a scoreless inning of relief.
