Sconone Scores Five in Loss at Connecticut

Storrs, CT – Melissa Sconone found the back of the net five times for a new career high, but the Hofstra women's lacrosse team suffered a 13-11 defeat against Connecticut from Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Connecticut in Tuesday non-conference action.
 
Hofstra is now 3-4 following Tuesday's defeat, and the Huskies are now 2-4 on the year.
 
In addition to Sconone's five, Kate Fiola scored a pair for the Pride, while Taylor Mennella and Lauren Coletti both tallied two points on a goal and an assist, and Kristin Redding and Kerry Walser scored one goal apiece. In net, Luchianna Cardello tallied six saves against the Huskies.
 
Connecticut scored twice inside the first two minutes of a high-scoring first quarter as both teams combined for nine goals in the opening frame. Sconone scored her first of the game at 11:59 to put the Pride on the board, and her second goal canceled out a UConn tally to keep Hofstra within one. The Pride evened the score at 3-3 off the stick of Mennella at 6:24, but the Huskies scored goals at 5:20 and 1:32 to put the hosts back ahead by two goals. Sconone finished off a pass from Mennella for her first quarter hat-trick with 18 seconds left in the quarter to put the Pride behind 5-4.
 
In contrast from the opening quarter, the teams combined for just three goals in the second quarter, but the Pride scored two of them. After Connecticut opened the scoring in the second quarter at 10:28, neither team could find the back of the net until Redding tallied an unassisted strike at 3:22 to put the Pride down by one, and Fiola buried a pass from Coletti to even the score at 6-6 going into halftime.
 
The Huskies came out of the break and opened up a two-goal lead inside the first five minutes of the third quarter before Sconone tallied her fourth of the day at 9:31. Connecticut scored another pair of goals for a three-goal lead, the largest of the day, but Coletti ended the third quarter with a shot past the Connecticut keeper and in to put the Pride down by two.
 
Fiola's second of the day put the deficit to just one with 10:25 to go in the fourth quarter. After the Huskies scored their 11th of the day, Sconone ripped her fifth and final goal of the afternoon at 6:10 to set the difference back at one. Connecticut tallied the two of the final three goals late in the quarter, including the insurance goal with six seconds left, ensure the win.
 
Connecticut was led in scoring by Rayea Davis with four goals and an assist, while Susan Lafountain finished with a hat-trick against the Pride, and Abby Charron dished out three assists. Landyn White made 12 saves to pick up the win.
 
Hofstra begins its CAA schedule with a trip down to North Carolina, as the Pride take on Campbell on Saturday, March 16, at noon.
 
NOTES:
-Connecticut leads the all-time series 3-2 against Hofstra. The Huskies have won the last two meetings against the Pride.
-Walser brought down eight of Hofstra's 13 draw controls.
