Hofstra Gets Past FDU In Home Opener

Hempstead, NY - Four Hofstra pitchers combined to allow one run on five hits, while the Pride offense made the most of three hits in a 3-1 victory over FDU in the home opener at University Field.

The Pride snapped a five-game losing streak with the win and moved to 5-9 on the season. The Knights dropped to 2-12.

Hofstra got on the board in the fourth, taking advantage of FDU pitching. Luke Masiuk drew a leadoff walk off losing pitcher Jason Diaz (0-1) and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. After Steve Harrington was hit by a pitch, Matt Pelcher drove in the run with a fielder's choice groundout.

The score stayed that way until the seventh when the Pride took advantage of FDU's wildness on the mound. Sean Lane and Mike Dorcean drew one-out walks and advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Dylan Palmer laced a single to left that scored lane, and following a hit batter that loaded the bases, Alex McCoy drove in the third run with a sacrifice fly to right.

FDU plated a run in the eighth as Hunter D'Amato walked, stole second and third, and scored on Brian Sanders groundout.

Hofstra starter Penn Sealey went 4 ⅔ innings and allowed four hits with four strikeouts, but did not factor in the decision. Reliever Brian Hart (1-1) allowed a run on one hit over 2 ⅓ innings and had two strikeouts. Jake DesLaurier had a strikeout in ⅓ of an inning before giving way to Mike McKenna, who struck out two batters in 1 ⅔ innings to record his second save of the season.

Hofstra returns to action Friday when it hosts Manhattan at 3 p.m. in the first game of a three-game series.
