Hofstra Rallies Late, Holds Off New Mexico In Ninth To Win Series Opener

Albuquerque, NM - Hofstra erupted for seven runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 10-6 lead and then held off New Mexico for a 10-9 victory Friday at Santa Ana Star Field. Hofstra pitcher Mike McKenna struck out the final batter to strand three runners.

The Pride moved to 3-4 on the season with their second consecutive win. The Lobos slipped to 5-4 and saw a three-game winning streak come to an end.

Hofstra struck for a pair of runs in the first as Will Kennedy drove in Santino Rosso and Alex McCoy. New Mexico would get a run back in the bottom of the inning, and the teams traded runs in the second for a 3-2 Pride lead. The score remained that way until the sixth inning when the Lobos scored three times to take a 5-3 lead. Khalil Walker, Sean Stephens, and Konnor Kinkade each had RBI singles. Ethan Ott added an RBI double in the seventh to put New Mexico up, 6-3.

The Hofstra bats came alive in the eighth as the Pride sent 12 men to the plate and collected seven hits. Sean Lane had a pinch-hit RBI double to make it a 6-5 game and Rosso followed two batters later with a single to tie the game. Following a Steve Harrington single to put runners on the corners, McCoy doubled to the wall in left center to put the Pride ahead, 8-6. Luke Masiuk singled in the Pride's ninth run and Hofstra would add a 10th on an infield error on a pickoff attempt.

Will Asby brought the Lobos back within two, 10-8, with a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning. After Hofstra went down in order in the ninth, New Mexico got a run on a Walker single and then loaded the bases with two outs on a pair of walks. But McKenna caught pinch-hitter Kyle Smith looking on a 3-2 count to end the game.

Hofstra reliever Danny Kelleher (2-0) picked up the win, allowing two runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings. Rosso, Matt Pelcher, Michael Brown, and Michael Florides each had two hits for the Pride. Kennedy, McCoy, and Lane each knocked in two runs.

Wyatt Hardy (0-1) took the loss in relief, allowing six runs in six hits in 2/3 of an inning. Reed Spenrath and Stephens each had three hits for New Mexico.

The teams continue the series with a doubleheader Saturday at 12 p.m. (MST).
