Hofstra Splits Doubleheader At New Mexico

Albuquerque, NM - Alex McCoy's two-run home run in the top of the 10th inning broke a 14-14 tie and Hofstra held off New Mexico in the bottom of the inning to take game one of a doubleheader, 16-15. The Lobos won the nightcap, 11-7. Hofstra moved to 4-5 with the split, while New Mexico moved to 6-5.

Game one was a wild, back-and-forth affair that featured nine lead changes. Hofstra took a 14-11 lead in the eighth inning with McCoy drawing a bases loaded walk, Will Kennedy driving in a run on an error, and Matt Pelcher delivering a sacrifice fly. But the Lobos scored three times in their half of the inning and neither team would score in the ninth to force extra innings.

Steve Harrington led off the inning with a single and McCoy followed by taking a 2-0 pitch from Brian McBroom over the centerfield fence. The Lobos rallied in the bottom of the inning, drawing back-to-back walks to start the frame. A sacrifice moved the runners up and, following a strikeout, two more walks forced in a run. Cade Henry came on with the bases loaded and struck out the final batter on three pitches to seal the win.

Russell Hunter (1-0) picked up the win in relief, while Henry notched his first save. The Pride's offense collected a season-high 22 hits with Santino Rosso leading the way with his first career five-hit game. He also drove in four runs. McCoy and Dylan Palmer each had four hits. McCoy drove in five runs, while Palmer had four runs scored.

In game two, the Lobos erased a 7-4 deficit with a four-run fifth inning and then tacked on three more runs in the sixth to pick up their first win in the series. Jake Holland (2-run) and Tye Wood hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth and Holland added a three-run shot in the sixth.

Hofstra had taken a 4-0 lead in the first behind an RBI single from McCoy, a two-run double from Pelcher, and a run-scoring single from Luke Masiuk. The Lobos got two runs back in the bottom of the inning. Rosso and Pelcher drove in runs in the second and third inning for a 6-2 lead. New Mexico's Ethan Ott made it 6-4 with a home run in the bottom of the third before Harrington made it a three-run lead for the Pride with a solo shot in the fifth.

Carlos Martinez (1-1) took the loss, though he did strike out a career-high eight batters in his 4 1/3 innings.

The teams conclude the series Sunday at 12 p.m. (MST).

Notes:
-Rosso hit his team-high fourth home run in the opener and was 7-10 in the twinbill
-Hunter's win was the first of his career.
-Michael Florides had three hits in game one.
