Hempstead, NY – Delaware outscored the Hofstra women's basketball team 48-26 in the second half as the Pride suffered an 82-59 loss at home to CAA foe Blue Hens from the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
Hofstra's record now sits at 7-13 and 1-8 against conference competition, and Delaware improves to 8-13 and 4-5 in the CAA.
Emma Von Essen,
Sorelle Ineza, and
Brooke Anya all finished in double figures for the Pride; Von Essen led all players with 19 points, while Ineza posted 16 against the Blue Hens, and Anya ended her day with 14 points. Anya also led the Pride with six rebounds, and
Ally Knights assisted on six Hofstra baskets.
Hofstra got off to a hot start with six of the first eight points off a Von Essen three and a three-point play by Anya. The Blue Hens rattled off six straight points to lead by two, but another three-point play from Anya put the hosts back on top by one at the 6:42 mark. The teams traded the lead three times before an Anya layup and a trey by Von Essen gave Hofstra a four-point lead with 1:53 left in the quarter. Another six-point burst from Delaware put the visitors in front by two inside the final minute of the quarter, but Ineza hit a jump shot and converted a free throw on the final Hofstra possession of the quarter to give the Pride a one-point advantage.
Hofstra's lead grew to five with back-to-back baskets from Ineza prior to the second quarter media timeout at 8:42, but a 7-0 Delaware run gave the guests a two-point lead over Hofstra. Another 6-0 Hofstra spurt put the Pride back in front by four before a 7-2 Blue Hens run ended the half with a 34-33 lead for Delaware.
After Von Essen knocked down the third quarter's opening basket on a three-ball, Delaware in front with a 17-0 run lasting from a Chloe Wilson layup at 8:45 until
Zyheima Swint cashed in on a mid-range jump shot at 4:12, giving Delaware a 51-38 lead following the halfway point of the quarter. The Blue Hens continued its hot scoring quarter with six of the final 11 points to lead by 14 going into the final quarter. The visitors' scoring continued into the fourth, with the Blue Hens outscoring Hofstra 25-16 to earn the CAA win from the Mack Sports Complex.
Ande'a Cherisier led Delaware with 17 points as one of five Blue Hens players to finish in double figures.
The Pride's CAA slate continues with a road game against Towson on Sunday, February 11, with a 2 p.m. tip-off versus the Tigers.
NOTES:
-With five three-pointers against Delaware, Von Essen has registered multiple three-pointers in a game for the 28th time in her Hofstra career.
-Ineza has averaged 13.5 points per game in her career against Delaware.
-Delaware has now won 17 consecutive meetings against the Pride, and the all-time series record is now 71-20 in favor of Delaware.
