Balanced Scoring, Second Half Defense Power Hofstra Past Towson

Towson, MD – Behind four members of the Hofstra women's basketball team scoring double-digit point totals and a second half defensive effort that saw Towson connect on just six field goals, the Pride leaves TU Arena with a 58-44 win over the Tigers.

Hofstra improves to 8-13 and 2-8 in the CAA, snapping an eight-game losing streak in conference play. Towson drops to 13-9 and 5-6 against conference competition.

Sorelle Ineza powered the Pride with 13 points for her third consecutive game with 10+ points scored, while Micaela Carter scored a career-high 11 points against the Tigers, and Brooke Anya and Zyheima Swint finished with 10 points each. Swint pulled down 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season, and Anya forced three takeaways.

Towson raced out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter before a Carter trey sparked a 14-2 run lasting until the first quarter buzzer to give Hofstra a 14-12 lead over the Tigers. Baskets from Swint, Ja'Miyah Bryant, and Onna Brown, plus free throws from Carter, Bryant, and Ineza gave Hofstra the two-point advantage.

After Swint upped the Pride's lead to four with a layup at 8:58 of the second quarter, Towson closed the gap to two points with a 7-2 burst in the early goings of the quarter. Anya broke the Towson run with a contested layup, but Towson persisted and made it a two-point difference after a pair of Patricia Anumgba free throws at 4:31. Ineza sunk a three-pointer at the 3:52 mark to put the Pride ahead by five, but an 8-2 Towson run lasting until the halftime buzzer put the Tigers ahead by one going into the break.

After four lead changes inside the first four minutes of the third quarter, a Swint layup at 5:49 kicked-off a 12-2 Hofstra run to give the road side the lead for good. Anya, Carter, and Ineza all contributed to the Hofstra run, and the Pride defense limited Towson to just 1-11 from the floor as the Pride would lead by 10 going into the fourth quarter. Towson opened the fourth quarter on a 10-2 run to come to within two of the Pride, but Hofstra countered by keeping Towson scoreless from the 5:59 mark on while scoring the final 12 points of the contest to earn the CAA win on the road.

Kayla Morris led Towson with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Hofstra is staying on Long Island for its next set of conference games, starting off with a trip East to face Stony Brook on Friday, February 16, before hosting Northeastern on Sunday, February 18. Friday's tip against the Seawolves is set for 6:31 p.m.
