Buies Creek, NC – Campbell outscored Hofstra 31-18 in the second half of Sunday's CAA contest from Gilbert Craig Gore Arena as the Fighting Camels defeated the Pride 65-51.
Hofstra slips to 9-16 and 3-11 in CAA action with today's defeat, while Campbell improves to 14-11 and 7-7 in its first season in the CAA.
Zyheima Swint led the Pride with a season-high 15 points and a team-leading eight rebounds, while
Ally Knights scored eight and pulled down five rebounds.
Brooke Anya led the team with four assists, and
Micaela Carter forced three takeaways.
After Campbell opened the game on a 14-4 run before Hofstra cut the lead to five following a
Janaia Fargo three and a pair of
Sorelle Ineza free throws. After Campbell put its lead back to 10, Swint scored four straight points inside the final minute to trail by six. A two-pointer by Gemma Nunez set Campbell's lead to eight inside the opening two minutes of the second quarter, but a three-point play by Knights brought Hofstra back to within five before a 5-0 run gave Campbell its 10-point lead back with 7:21 on the clock. The teams traded points before two Anya layups and a Carter trey to beat the shot clock at 1:50 brought Hofstra to within three. Shy Tuelle sunk a three-pointer with 1:27 left before halftime, but a Swint layup and a Carter buzzer-beater three set the score at 34-33 in favor of Campbell going into the break.
Hofstra took its first lead of the game with a 5-0 run, putting Hofstra ahead by four two minutes into the third quarter. Campbell closed the gap to two points twice in the frame before a Svenia Nurenberg free throw made it a one-point game with 3:57 left in the quarter. An Anya free throw gave Hofstra a two-point cushion, but a Tuelle trey to end the quarter and give Campbell a one-point lead going into the fourth quarter. The Fighting Camels opened the fourth quarter with an 11-2 run, widening its lead to 13 points as the Pride were never able to come within single-digits of the Fighting Camels for the remainder of regulation.
Tuelle led all players with 20 points in Sunday's conference contest.
