Hampton Tops Hofstra in Defensive Battle

Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra women's basketball team was unable to overcome a smothering Hampton defense and numerous turnovers, as the Lady Pirates captured a 48-42 win over the Pride from the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex in late-season Coastal Athletic Association action.

The loss puts Hofstra at 9-17 and 3-12 in league play, and Hampton is now 3-22 and 3-12 in the CAA.

Sorelle Ineza led Hofstra with 13 points, while Zyheima Swint pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds and posted three blocks in the loss for Hofstra.

After Ineza put the Pride on the board first with an open jumper, Hampton pulled in front with an 8-1 run to lead the hosts by five. After clawing back to within two on an Emma Von Essen make from beyond the arc, Hampton held Hofstra scoreless for the final 4:20 of the first quarter while scoring nine unanswered points to lead by 11, the biggest lead of the game for the Lady Pirates.

The Pride defense locked down Hampton's offense in the second quarter, allowing just four points while scoring 11 to make it a four-point difference heading into halftime. Hofstra opened the quarter with a 6-0 run courtesy of four Ally Knights points and a contested layup by Brooke Anya before the media timeout at 6:30. The Lady Pirates scored four straight to make it a nine-point contest with 2:20 to go, but a Von Essen trey and a pair of Micaela Carter free throws set the halftime score at 23-19 in favor of Hampton.

The Lady Pirates' lead jumped back to 10 with the first six points of the third quarter, as the Pride closed the gap to as low as only six points to trail by seven going into the fourth quarter. Hampton's lead grew back to 10 inside the opening minute of the final quarter, but Hofstra kept at it and eventually brought the deficit down to just three points with 3:03 remaining after a 6-0 run lasting from a Tionna Baker basket and layup at 4:34 until 2:28 when Le'Asia Foreman made it a five-point contest with a driving layup. Hofstra wouldn't close the gap to less than four for the remainder of the game until the final buzzer.

Camryn Hill led all Hampton players with 12 points.

The Pride concludes the home portion of its 2023-24 schedule on Sunday, March 3, with a 2 p.m. contest against defending CAA champions Monmouth. Prior to the opening tip-off, the Hofstra women's basketball program will honor six departing seniors in its Senior Day ceremony.

NOTES:
-The four points scored by Hampton in the second quarter are the fewest allowed by Hofstra to a Division I opponent in a quarter this season.
-Ally Knights dished out a team-leading three assists.
-With two three-point baskets, Emma Von Essen is now tied with Cigi McCollin (76, 2004-05 & 2006-07) for the fourth-most made threes in a season at Hofstra.
-Hofstra is now 1-3 all-time against Hampton.
