Hofstra Tripped Up By Marist

Hempstead, NY - John Madsen had three goals and an assist, while Sam Lutfi and Justin Sykes each had a pair of goals and an assist but Marist scored two straight goals to snap a 9-9 tie and went on to post a 12-10 victory over Hofstra Saturday at James M. Shuart Stadium.

The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Pride, who moved to 3-2 on the season. The Red Foxes are 3-1.

Marist scored the first goal of the game, 3:50 into the first quarter, before the Pride roared back with two goals in less than a minute. Anthony Mollica scored his second of the season off a feed from Griffin Turner with 10:52 on the clock and Sykes notched his eighth off a pass from Madsen with 10:00 showing. The Red Foxes would score four straight to end the quarter with a 5-2 lead.

Sykes got his second of the game from Lutfi nearly 10 minutes into the second quarter. Lutfi, who was playing in his first game of the season, then notched his first goal of the year with 1:33 to go to send the Pride into halftime trailing by one.

The teams traded goals in the third quarter until the Pride scored two straight to tie the score at 7 on Madsen's second of the game, right off the faceoff, with Chase Patterson getting the assist with 1:06 to play. That would be the final goal of the third quarter.

Sean Mullan and Sam Ferral scored back-to-back goals for Marist to start the fourth, but the Pride battled back once again with unassisted goals from Colton Rudd and Turner to tie the game at nine with 5:05 to play. Marist answered a little over 30 seconds later as Mullan scored third of the game and Vinny Butrico followed with 3:12 remaining to put the Red Foxes up by two, 11-9. On the ensuing faceoff, Madsen and Patterson connected on another goal, with 3:07 to play to make it a one-goal game. But the Pride could not get the equalizer and Marist would score in an empty net with five seconds to go to close the scoring.

Mullan finished with three goals for Marist, while Butrico had two goals and two assists. Goalkeeper Noble Smith made 13 saves.

Patterson won 18 of 25 faceoffs and collected nine ground balls. Goalkeeper Sean Henderson made nine saves.
