Tyler Thomas had another spectacular game with 28 points and five steals to lead the Hofstra men's basketball team to a huge 69-57 victory over Drexel on Thursday evening at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
Darlinstone Dubar added 13 points and seven rebounds, while
Jaquan Carlos tallied eight points, a career-high-tying 10 rebounds, and five assists.
Hofstra improved to 17-11 and 10-5 in the league. The Pride has won five of its last six and nine of its last 11 games. Drexel dropped to an identical 17-11 and 10-5 in the league. The Dragons saw their short two-game win streak come to an end.
It was all Hofstra in the game's first few minutes as the Pride jumped out to a 16-8 lead at the 12:04 mark following a three-pointer from Thomas. The Dragons answered with an 11-2 run to earn a 23-22 lead with under five minutes left before intermission. The Pride was able to take a one-point lead into the break as
Jacco Fritz and Carlos had baskets for the Pride in the final two minutes of the half.
It was a back and forth first few minutes of the second stanza as neither team was able to pull away. With Drexel leading 43-41 with just under 11 minutes left in regulation, Hofstra took complete control of the contest and used a 16-0 scoring run to lead 57-43 with 6:19 remaining. Dubar was huge during the run as he had nine of the Pride's 16 points during the game-changing spurt.
Drexel closed the gap to eight on a pair of occasions in the final few minutes but the Pride hit its final four free throws of the game to push the final margin to 12.
