Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra women's basketball team got out to a quick start over visiting Northeastern, pouring on 27 points in the first quarter while allowing only five to the Huskies, in a 66-46 home win on Sunday from the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
Hofstra improves to 9-14 and 3-9 in the CAA, and Northeastern drops to 8-15 and 4-9 against league play.
Three Pride players finished in double figures, with
Emma Von Essen leading the way with 22 points on 9-13 shooting from the floor and 4-8 from downtown. Von Essen was joined by
Brooke Anya and
Sorelle Ineza with 13 points each against the Huskies, and
Ally Knights and
Ja'Miyah Bryant tied for the team-lead with seven rebounds. Knights and Bryant also dished out five and four assists, respectively.
Hofstra roared out of the opening whistle with 12 of the first 14 points of the game before the first quarter media timeout at 6:28. The Pride kept the scoring going after the break with 11 unanswered points from Von Essen, Anya, Knights, and
Janaia Fargo while holding the Huskies scoreless for over seven minutes until a free throw from Sophia Carlisle and a Maddie Vizza fast break layup with 50 seconds left. Hofstra closed out the quarter with four points inside the final 45 seconds to lead by 22.
The teams traded baskets throughout the frame, with Hofstra never leading by more than 23 and Northeastern unable to reduce the deficit to under 20 points until a layup and free throw by Yirsy Quéliz with 1:05 remaining in the quarter brought the Huskies to within 18 of the Pride. However, back-to-back two-pointes by Von Essen and Ineza padded Hofstra's lead at halftime to 39-17 over the visitors.
Hofstra opened the third quarter with an 8-3 burst, giving the Pride its biggest lead of the day at 28 points. The Huskies brought the gap inside 20 points with 1:17 left in the quarter, but a Von Essen trey and a close-range basket by
Micaela Carter gave Hofstra a 22-point lead after three quarters of play. Northeastern outscored Hofstra 13-11 in the fourth quarter, but it was nowhere near enough to turn the tide in favor of the Huskies before the final buzzer sounded.
Derin Erdogan finished with 12 points to lead Northeastern in scoring.
Hofstra is back at the Mack Sports Complex on Friday, February 23, at 7 p.m. against Charleston. Visit HofstraTickets.com for ticket information.
