Hofstra Rally Falls Short At Virginia

Charlottesville, VA - Virginia scored five runs over the fifth and sixth innings to turn a 6-6 game into an 11-6 contest and held on to defeat Hofstra, 11-9, Sunday at Disharoon Park. The win gave the No. 11/14 ranked Cavaliers a three game sweep of the Pride.

Hofstra slipped to 0-3, while Virginia moved to 3-0.

For the third time in the series, Hofstra took a first inning lead as Dylan Palmer drew a leadoff walk and Santino Rosso followed with a two-run home run. The Cavaliers went up by one with a three-run bottom of the first. The Pride responded in the top of the second with three more runs, highlighted by a two-run double from Palmer.

But Virginia answered once again, tying the score on RBI doubles from Griff O'Ferrall and Ethan Anderson. The top of the third inning saw Hofstra go up by one as Steve Harrington walked, Penn Sealey doubled and Matt Pelcher delivered a sacrifice fly. The Cavaliers tied the game at six in the bottom of the frame as Henry Godbout had an RBI double.

The score remained tied until the bottom of the fifth when Virginia plated two runs to take an 8-6 lead. Henry Ford led off with a sun/shadow-aided double to right field and Casey Sauke followed with a double to straight away center. Sauke would later come in on a Godbout sacrifice fly. Ford added a three-run home run in the sixth inning to make it an 11-6 game.

The Pride would not go quietly as three consecutive singles to start the seventh loaded the bases. Pelcher drove in two runs with a double and Michael Florides added an RBI groundout to make it 11-9 in favor of the Cavaliers.

But that was as close as Hofstra would get as relievers Blake Barker and Aidan Teel combined to keep the Pride off the board over the final 2 1/3 innings. Bryson Moore (1-0) pitched three scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. Seven Virginia batters had two hits in the game, while Ford and Sauke each drove in three runs.

Hofstra was led by Sealey's three hits. Pelcher and Rosso each drove in three runs, while Sean Lane scored twice. Reliever Cade Henry (0-1) was charged with the loss after allowing four runs over 2 1/3 innings.

Hofstra returns to action Friday, February 23 in the start of a three-game series at Liberty.

Notes:
-Palmer extended his hitting streak to 12 games dating back to last season.
-Rosso's home run was his first of the season and 11th of his career.
-Danny Kelleher pitched two scoreless innings.
-Hofstra is 0-5 all-time against Virginia.
-Pelcher's three RBIs are a career-best.
