Carlos Sets Program And CAA Single-Game Assist Mark In Pride Rout

Hempstead, NY - Jaquan Carlos had 19 assists, breaking the program and CAA mark for single-game assists, in leading the Hofstra men's basketball team to an 82-62 rout of Northeastern on Saturday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

Carlos broke the program record of 16, set by Robbie Weingard versus Bloomfield during the 1983-84 season. He also broke the CAA mark, also 16, previously held by Greg Beckwith of Richmond against Navy during the 1985-86 season.

The 19 assists ties the NCAA season-high previously achieved by Drew Thelwell of Morehead State against Alice Lloyd. It is the most assists by an NCAA Division I player against an NCAA Division I opponent since Markquis Nowell had 19 for Kansas State against Michigan State on March 23, 2023.

Carlos added five points and eight rebounds in the contest. The record-breaking assist, No. 17 on the day, came with 8:29 left in the second half on a three-pointer from Tyler Thomas

Darlinstone Dubar led Hofstra with 24 points in the win, while German Plotnikov tied his career-high with 20 points.

Hofstra improved to 16-11 overall and 9-5 in conference play with the win. The Pride has won five of its last six and nine of its last 11 games. Northeastern dropped to 10-17 and 5-9 in the CAA.

A quick 7-0 run provided Hofstra with an early 9-2 lead in the game with Dubar draining a three-pointer with 16:50 on the clock. A pair of free throws from Thomas gave the Pride its first double-figure lead at 32-21 with 4:37 remaining in the opening stanza and Hofstra would take a similar 11-point lead into the intermission.

The Huskies cut into the deficit, making it an eight-point game at 45-37 with 16:44 left in regulation but the Pride scored nine straight points to push the lead to 17 and never looked back. Plotnikov had a pair of three-pointers during the run that broke the game open. The lead grew to as many as 29 as Hofstra added an 18-3 run that culminated with a basket from Dubar with 3:10 left in the second stanza. That made the score 80-51 in favor of the Pride and put the exclamation point on a record-setting day for Hofstra.

Thomas added 18 points for the Pride. Silas Sunday chipped in with four points and six rebounds.

Luka Sakota had 13 points for Northeastern, while Chris Doherty added 12 and Masai Troutman chipped in with 11.

Hofstra is back in action on Thursday when it hosts Drexel at 7 p.m. For ticket information visit HofstraTickets.com. That game will air nationally on the CBS Sports Network.
