Hofstra Falls At No. 11/14 Virginia

Charlottesville, VA - The 14th-ranked Cavaliers of Virginia scored eight runs in the third inning to take an 8-1 lead and never looked back in a 21-3 victory over Hofstra Saturday at Disharoon Park. 

Hofstra slipped to 0-2 on the season with the loss, while Virginia is 2-0. 

For the second game in a row, Hofstra took a first inning lead as Dylan Palmer led off with a single, stole second and third, and scored on an error. The lead would hold until the home third as Luke Hanson tied the score with a leadoff home run and two batters later, Griff O'Ferrall hit a two-run shot for a 3-1 lead. The Cavaliers would get an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to go up by four, 5-1, before Bobby Whalen delivered a bases-loaded double to knock in three for an 8-1 advantage. 

Virginia would score five more runs in the fourth inning and four in the fifth for a 17-1 lead. Michael Florides made it 17-3 for Hofstra with a two-run double in the sixth, but the Cavaliers tacked on a run in the sixth and three more in the eighth to lead, 21-3. 

Starter Steven Kaenzig (0-1) took the loss for the Pride, allowing eight runs on seven hits over 2 2/3 innings. Palmer went 2-5 with a run. Matt Pelcher also had two hits in the game. 

O'Ferrall drove in four runs for the Cavaliers. Harrison Didawick homered and drove in three runs, while Henry Ford was 3-5 with three runs scored. Evan Blanco (1-0), who started and went the first three innings in a planned bullpen game, was credited with the win after allowing an unearned run on four hits. 

The teams conclude the series Sunday with a 1 p.m. start time. 

Notes:
-Hofstra is 0-4 all-time versus Virginia.
-Palmer extended his hitting streak to 11 games dating back to last season and has multiple hits in both games this season.
-Penn Sealey notched his first career hit in the game, while Mike Dorcean collected his first hit in a Pride uniform as well. 
-Virginia outhit the Pride, 17-9.
-Hofstra committed four errors.
