Stony Brook, NY – The Hofstra women's basketball team led Stony Brook after one quarter, but the Seawolves outscored Hofstra 60-26 the rest of the way in an 81-48 defeat for the Pride in CAA play from Island Federal Credit Union Arena.
Hofstra slips to 8-14 and 2-9 against league opponents, and Stony Brook improves to 20-3 with a CAA mark of 10-2.
Zyheima Swint and
Sorelle Ineza led the Pride with 11 and 10 points, respectively, while
Brooke Anya pulled down a team-leading six rebounds. Ineza also forced a team-best three takeaways while she and Anya finished with two assists apiece.
Hofstra jumped out to a five-point lead inside the first three minutes before Stony Brook tied the game at 8-8 with five unanswered points. Two-pointers from Ineza and
Janaia Fargo gave Hofstra a four-point lead over the hosts with 5:46 left in the quarter. Stony Brook rallied for a 13-4 burst to take a five point lead with 2:12 remaining, but Hofstra scored the final six points of the quarter on free throws from Anya and Markisic and an
Emma Von Essen trey to take a 22-21 lead into the second quarter.
Hofstra and Stony Brook traded two-point possessions to start the second quarter before pulled in front with 12 unanswered points for a nine-point lead over the Pride, and the Seawolves grew their lead to 10 following a Von Essen jumper with the final three points of the quarter to lead by 10 at the halftime break.
The Pride made it a six-point difference with the first four points of the third quarter, but it would be the closest Hofstra would come as the Seawolves put the game well out of reach with a 13-0 run lasting from a Gigi Gonzalez make at 8:41 until Swint connected on a turnaround jumper with 2:03 left until the quarter buzzer. Stony Brook added five more points to its total to make it a 58-36 score after three quarters. The Seawolves outscored Hofstra 23-12 in the fourth quarter to finish off the Friday night CAA contest.
Gonzalez finished with 24 points to lead the Seawolves against the Pride.
