Hofstra Drops Hard-Fought Season Opener At No. 11/14 Virginia

Charlottesville, VA - Hofstra banged out 15 hits and led No. 11/14 Virginia after 4 ½ innings and were tied after 7 ½ innings before eventually falling to the Cavaliers, 10-8, Friday at Disharoon Park in the season opener for both teams.

Tied at one after one inning, the Pride scored three times in the third to take a 4-1 lead. Steve Harrington had an RBI single, Alex McCoy added an RBI double and Sean Lane drove in a run with a ground out. The score remained that way until the bottom of the sixth when Virginia scored six runs to take a 7-4 lead. Harrison Didawick had a two-run home run for the Cavaliers.

The Pride chipped away with two runs in the seventh, one on a Will Kennedy RBI double and the other on a wild pitch. Then in the top of the eighth, Matt Pelcher led off with a solo home run to tie the score at seven.

Virginia went ahead in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases on three occasions and scoring twice on passed balls and once on a wild pitch to take a 10-7 lead. The Pride threatened in the ninth, scoring a run on a McCoy single and putting the tying runs on base before Virginia closer Aidan Teel retired the final two batters to get the save.

Dylan Palmer led the Pride's offensive attack, going 4-5 with two runs and a stolen base. Harrington was 3-4 with two RBIs, while McCoy was 3-5 with a double, a stolen base, and two RBIs in his Hofstra debut. Santino Rosso had two hits and scored three runs. Michael O'Hanlon started on the mound and allowed three runs on three hits over five innings with five strikeouts.
