Sean Henderson had 19 saves and
John Madsen tallied six goals to lead the Hofstra men's lacrosse team to a 17-13 win over local rival St. John's on Tuesday evening at James M. Shuart Stadium.
The 19 saves were a career-high for Henderson and the most for a Hofstra goalie since Jack Concannon had 22 against Massachusetts on May 3, 2018. Madsen's six goals were a new career-high.
The win was Hofstra's second in three games this season and improved the Pride's record to 2-1. St. John's fell to 0-3 with the loss.
An early 3-1 deficit was erased by Hofstra with three straight goals in the first quarter, including a goal from
Griffin Turner that put the Pride in front at 4-3 with 4:20 showing on the clock.
St. John's would answer and score six of the next nine goals in the contest to eventually lead 9-7 at halftime. The Red Storm pushed the lead to as many as four late in the third quarter at 12-8 before Hofstra began to mount the comeback.
Madsen put the team on his back offensively and started a game-changing 8-0 Pride run that pushed the home team in front at 16-12. Madsen tallied three goals during the run and was helped on the defensive end as Henderson had an incredible 10 saves in the fourth quarter. Madsen's sixth goal of the game would put the Pride ahead 16-12 with 7:01 left before each team tallied goals in the final five-plus minutes to account for the final score.
Jones finished with six points on three goals and three assists, while Turner added a goal and four assists. Madsen's seven points (6G, 1A) were also a career-best.
Chase Patterson was 23-33 on face-offs for Hofstra and added 16 ground balls.
Brian Kelly tallied six points on five goals and one assist for St. John's, which also got two goals and two assists from Bobby Seel. Danny Seaman had 10 saves for the Red Storm.

NOTES
- Today was the 26th all-time meeting between Hofstra and St. John's. The Pride now leads the all-time series, 20-6. Hofstra has won three straight in the series and five of the last six meetings.
- Madsen's previous career-high was three goals on five separate occasions, most recently at Navy this past Saturday.
- Today was just the third career start for Henderson, whose previous high was eight saves at Navy.
- It was the sixth career hat trick for Madsen, the fifth career hat trick for Jones, and the third career hat trick for Sykes.
