John Madsen tallied a hat-trick for the Hofstra men's lacrosse team in a 16-8 defeat against Navy in the first road game of the 2024 season for the Pride from Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland.
Madsen and
Griffin Turner each led the Pride (1-1) with three points on the day, with Turner scoring once and assisting twice against the Midshipmen.
Trevor Natalie found the back of the net twice, and
Colton Rudd tallied a goal and an assist. JR Roselle led the way in defense with a pair of takeaways and an assist, and
Sean Henderson made eight stops.
Xavier Arline led all players with six points on four goals and two assists for the Midshipmen (2-0), and Dan Daly earned the win with 12 saves for Navy in 55:24 between the posts. Gabe Craven played the final 4:36 for Navy and made two saves.
Navy's Jackson Peters scored 11 seconds into the start of the game, but
Griffin Turner finished off a pass from Rudd for the Pride's first goal of the afternoon at 5:53 in the opening quarter. Peters scored his second of the quarter over one minute later, but the score would be tied up at 2-2 on Madsen's tally with 2:55 left. Navy rattled off three straight goals to bring the score to 5-2 after the first quarter, and they kept Hofstra off the board in the second quarter while scoring three goals of their own to lead by six at halftime.
Natalie ended Hofstra's goal drought two minutes into the third quarter off a pass from Turner, and Natalie bagged his second goal of the contest with an unassisted strike at 4:17 to bring the Pride back to within five following Arline's second of the day. The Midshipmen went on a 6-0 burst inside the final three minutes of the third quarter lasting until the 9:09 mark of the fourth quarter when Rudd broke the run with his sixth goal of the season.
Justin Sykes rippled the twine with an unassisted goal, and Madsen scored his second and third goals of the contest inside the final two minutes of regulation.
Hofstra is back at James M. Shuart Stadium for three straight home games against New York-based opponents, starting off with St. John's on Tuesday, February 13, at 6 p.m.
NOTES:
-Hofstra is now 6-16 all-time against Navy. This was Navy's third consecutive win over Hofstra.
-Today was Madsen's fourth-career hat trick and his first of the 2024 season.
-Turner scooped up five of Hofstra's 27 ground balls.
