Hamden, CT -
Jean Aranguren led all scorers with 23 points, while also adding eight rebounds, six assists, and three steals, but it wasn't enough as the Hofstra men's basketball team dropped a 75-69 overtime decision at Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon. The game was the Pride's final non-conference contest of the 2024-25 season.
Cruz Davis joined Aranguren in double figures with 14 points, while
Michael Graham nearly had a double-double with eight points, 13 rebounds, and three blocked shots.
The game pitted two head coaches who are quite familiar with each other as Hofstra Head Coach
Speedy Claxton opposed former Hofstra head coach and former Hofstra assistant coach Tom Pecora. Pecora served as an assistant coach at Hofstra from 1994 to 2001 and was the program's head coach from 2001 to 2010.
Hofstra slipped to 8-5 with the loss, while Quinnipiac improved to 6-7.
The Pride took a 26-18 lead in the opening stanza before the Bobcats used an 18-6 run over the final eight minutes of the first half to earn a 36-32 lead at the break.
In the second half, Quinnipiac opened up a 51-43 lead with just over 10 minutes left before Hofstra began to battle back. The Pride eventually knotted the score at 61 on a pair of free throws from Aranguren and neither team could take control down the stretch and the game headed to overtime tied at 63.
Aranguren and Davis each had buckets in the opening minute of the extra session sandwiched around a Quinnipiac basket to give the visitors a narrow lead. Down by two later in overtime, Davis evened the score at 69 with 1:40 showing on the clock. Hofstra would be unable to get over the hump, though, as Paul Otieno scored what would be the game-winner with 53 seconds left.
Amarri Monroe led Quinnipiac with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Otieno tallied 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Bobcats.
Hofstra will open CAA play on Thursday when William & Mary visits the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. For ticket information visit HofstraTickets.com, call (516) HOF-TIXX, or stop by the Hofstra Athletics Ticket Office during normal business hours.
