Baker's Overtime Olimpico Goal Sends Hofstra To CAA Semifinals

Elon, NC - Teddy Baker scored an Olimpico goal with 2:15 remaining in the second overtime to give 18th-ranked and fourth-seeded Hofstra a 3-2 victory over fifth-seeded Charleston in the first round of the Coastal Athletic Association Championship Thursday night at Elon's Rudd Field. The win sent Hofstra to the CAA Semifinals for the seventh consecutive season.

Hofstra improved to 12-4-2 with the win, while Charleston sees its season end with a 10-6-2 mark.

The Pride wasted little time in getting on the board as Laurie Goddard took a short pass from Teddy Baker and sent a shot past Olly Marshall for his seventh goal of the season at the 4:42 mark. The lead would last until 64:25 when Charleston's Matt Lenert converted a pass from Noah Gold at the back post to tie the game.

Carles would snap the tie at 71:53 as the fifth-year graduate student collected a ball just inside the 18-yard box and fired a right-footed shot past Marshall into the left corner. The goal was Carles' second of the season. Just about seven minutes later, the Cougars Ryan Watson leveled the score when he picked off a clear attempt and sent a shot from the top of the box into the upper left corner.

The teams played a scoreless first overtime, though the Pride had a chance right off the bat that was stopped by Marshall. Both teams had chances in the second overtime but Marshall and Hofstra keeper Filippo Dadone each made saves. With Hofstra pressuring, the Cougars sent the ball over the end line for a Pride corner kick with 2:16 remaining. Baker took the kick from the left side and drove a ball that curled in past Marshall for the game-winner.

The Pride moves on to face top-seeded Elon Sunday at 2 p.m.
