Hofstra Blanks Top Seeded Elon in Semifinals, Will Host CAA Championship Game

Elon, NC - Laurie Goddard scored a pair of second half goals as the 18th-ranked and fourth-seeded Hofstra University men's soccer team advanced to their fifth consecutive Coastal Athletic Association Championship Game with a 2-0 semifinals victory over top-seeded Elon Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field. The Pride will be looking for their fourth consecutive CAA title Saturday night when it hosts sixth-seeded UNCW at 7 p.m.

Hofstra moved to 13-4-2 on the season and extended its winning streak to three games. Elon falls to 10-7-1 with the loss. The Pride moved to 2-0 against the Phoenix this season and have won four consecutive meetings in the series.

After a scoreless first half, Goddard put Hofstra on the board at the 53:01 mark after executing an excellent give-and-go with Teddy Baker. Goddard passed the ball to Baker on the left side and the senior midfielder delivered a cross back into the box that Goddard left his feet to head into the upper right corner. Just 3:40 later, Goddard collected his second goal as he was the recipient of a Jacob Woznicki pass into the left side of the box before sending a right-footed shot past Tomas Wroblweski. Hofstra keeper Filippo Dadone was also credited with an assist on the play as his kick was flicked on by Woznicki.

The Hofstra defense made the lead stand as it kept the Phoenix from recording a shot on goal in the second half and allowed just one in the first half. Dadone saved the lone shot on goal for his eighth shutout of the season. Wroblewski made one save for Elon.

Hofstra will be looking to clinch its ninth NCAA Championship berth when it hosts the Seahawks at Captains Field. The Pride posted a 3-0 win over UNCW at home on September 14.
