Dynasty! Hofstra Wins Fourth Consecutive CAA Championship

Hempstead, NY - The 18th-ranked Hofstra University men's soccer team, seeded fourth, won its fourth consecutive Coastal Athletic Association championship Saturday night, 1-0, over sixth-seeded UNCW thanks to an own goal late in the second half. The Pride became the first team in CAA history to win four consecutive titles and earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.

Hofstra moved to 14-4-2 on the season with the win, its fourth in a row. The Seahawks see their season end at 6-9-5.

Hofstra controlled the game throughout and would have had a large lead had it not been for the stellar play of UNCW keeper Trey Smiley. Smiley made several point blank saves to keep the Pride off the board and also picked off or punched out many of Hofstra's eight corner kicks. He finished the night with a career-high seven saves.

However, with just under 10 minutes remaining in the second half, Hofstra's Pierce Infuso sent a high kick from beyond the midfield stripe into the UNCW box. A Seahawks defender went up to head the ball and sent it backwards over the head of Smiley, who had come off his line, and into the net for the only goal of the night.

Hofstra's defense limited UNCW to just five shots on the night with two shots from distance on goal that were easily handled by netminder Filippo Dadone. Hofstra had 13 shots in the contest with seven on target.

Hofstra will learn its NCAA opponent Monday when the field is announced at 1 p.m. on NCAA.com.
