Hofstra Tripped Up By Vermont In NCAA Second Round

Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra University men's soccer team ran the gamut of emotions in a 2-1 loss to Vermont Sunday evening in the second round of the NCAA Championship. The Pride scored a game-tying goal early in the second half and then saw the Catamounts retake the lead less than a minute later. Then, in the final five minutes another equalizer was taken off the board following a late offsides call by the center referee.

Hofstra, which was seeded seventh in the NCAA Championship, sees its season end with a 14-5-2 record. The Catamounts, who were unseeded, advanced to the NCAA third round for the third consecutive season and improved to 13-2-5 with the win.

Vermont was able to strike first as Yaniv Bazini won a 50-50 ball in the box from a Mike Bleeker pass and sent a shot past Hofstra keeper Filippo Dadone 7:23 into the contest. The Catamounts would hold the lead until Teddy Baker sent a pass that glanced off a defender to Jacob Woznicki, who put in the shot to tie the game at one at the 51:12 mark.

However, the momentum was taken back by Vermont just 51 seconds later as David Ismail's shot from a near impossible angle somehow found its way inside the far post to put the Catamounts back up by one. Zach Barrett was credited with the assist on the play.

The Pride seemingly tied the game with 4:04 remaining as Roc Carles sent in a rebound off a shot from Laurie Goddard. But after a consultation between the assistant referee and the head referee, offsides was called and the goal was wiped off the board.

Hofstra held a 13-6 advantage in shots and had 11 shots in the second half as it pressured the Catamounts for the full 45 minutes. Goalkeeper Niklas Herceg made four saves for the Catamounts.

Vermont will go on to host San Diego in the NCAA Third Round next weekend.
