Hempstead, NY – William & Mary outscored the Hofstra women's basketball team 13-4 in the fourth quarter, including the game-winning basket with five seconds left, as the Pride suffered a 48-46 defeat to the Tribe in Coastal Athletic Association action from the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
Hofstra sits at 7-6 overall and 1-1 in league play, and William & Mary improves to 6-7 overall and 2-0 against CAA opponents.
Emma Von Essen tallied nine points – eight coming in the second half – to lead the Pride in scoring, while
Ally Knights and
Zyheima Swint registered eight points each.
Brooke Anya pulled down a team-leading nine rebounds, and
Kayley Joseph-Bernard topped the Pride with three assists.
The Pride exploded out of the gates in the first quarter, scoring the first eight points of the contest inside of four minutes. The Pride continued its opening rally with a pair of layups from Swint and
Selma Markisic before William & Mary got on the board with four free throws inside the final two minutes to put the first quarter score at 15-4 in favor of the hosts.
William & Mary stormed back with 12 unanswered points to take a one-point lead over the Pride with 3:39 left in the second quarter. Ineza broke the run with a floating jumper on the next Hofstra possession to put the home team back in front, but the Tribe retook the lead with a layup by Rebekah Frisby-Smith on their next possession, and a three by Cassidy Geddes put the guests ahead by four. Joseph-Bernard converted a tough layup, and the Pride took a one-point lead behind three free throws from Knights and Von Essen after a foul and technical foul on William & Mary's Nylah Young with 36 seconds left before the half. Alexa Mikeska sunk a buzzer-beater three to end the second quarter with the Tribe leading 24-22.
A five-point spurt from Von Essen sparked a 10-0 run to open the third quarter, giving Hofstra an eight-point lead four minutes into the start of the frame. William & Mary cut Hofstra's lead to three with five straight points, but a 7-2 Hofstra run put the lead back to eight for the hosts. Markisic knocked down a three inside the two-minute mark to put the Pride ahead by nine following a Geddes two-pointer, and a Frisby-Smith basket set the difference at seven points.
The Tribe cut Hofstra's lead to two with the first five points of the fourth quarter before a pair of Anya makes from the charity stripe put the Pride's lead inside of five minutes. Back-to-back layups by Anahi-Lee Cauley and Mikeska tied the game at 44-44, and Swint connected on a deep jumper to put Hofstra in front by two with 3:04 left in regulation. Young evened the score with an open layup at 1:43, and a shot clock violation gave the Tribe the ball with 29 seconds remaining on the clock. Bella Nascimento hit a fadeaway jumper with five seconds left in the game, and a desperation shot by Anya clanged off the iron as time expired.
Geddes led all players with 14 points for the Tribe.
Hofstra will make the trek to Massachusetts for its next contest on January 14 against Northeastern. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
NOTES:
-William & Mary has now won five consecutive games against Hofstra, and the Pride's all-time record against the Tribe now sits at 30-21-1.
-With 51 rebounds against the Tribe, Hofstra has recorded over 50 rebounds in a game for the third time this season.
-The Pride held William & Mary to 0-10 field goal shooting in the first quarter.
