Boston, MA – A fourth quarter comeback attempt by the Hofstra women's basketball team against Northeastern fell short in a tough 66-53 loss in CAA action on Sunday afternoon from the Cabot Center in Boston, Massachusetts.
The Pride's record stands at 1-2 in the conference and 7-7 overall, while Northeastern moves to 2-2 against CAA opponents and 6-8 overall.
Emma Von Essen scored team-leading 10 points and pulled down four rebounds, while
Tionna Baker posted eight points, four rebounds, and two steals off the bench, and
Brooke Anya was the team's top rebounder and leading distributer with five and three, respectively.
After Von Essen scored the first points on a free throw thanks to an administrative technical foul, Northeastern ripped off 16 unanswered points for a commanding 15-point before Von Essen broke the run with a long two at the 6:10 mark. After Baker sunk a pair of free throws, the Huskies ended the quarter on a 12-0 run to lead by 20.
The Huskies' lead grew to 24 points midway through the second quarter before a 9-2 run by Hofstra cut the deficit to 17 points, with Anya responsible for four points during the run. Northeastern scored the final three points of the half on free throws to put the margin back to 20 at halftime.
After a third quarter that saw Hofstra outscore Northeastern 13-10 to make it a 17-point margin, Hofstra came to life in the fourth quarter with a run of 10 unanswered points to cut Northeastern's lead to just seven points. Von Essen and
Ally Knights each scored five points during the run lasting just shy of five minutes, when Deja Bristol converted a second-chance layup at 5:56. Northeastern rattled off seven consecutive points to put the difference back at double-digits, and the Huskies scored eight of the game's final 17 points to come away with the win.
Derin Erdogan led all players with 18 points, followed by Bristol's 15 points for Northeastern.
Hofstra is back in action with a road game against Drexel on Friday, January 19. Tip-off against the Dragons from Philadelphia is 6 p.m.
NOTES:
