Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra University Department of Athletics mourns the passing of Donald "Don" Laux, a 1959 Hofstra graduate, former men's basketball student-athlete, former men's basketball assistant coach, and a former tennis coach at the University.
Laux played three seasons (1956-59) under the legendary Butch van Breda Kolff and was Hofstra's Most Valuable Player in 1959. In his senior campaign he averaged 12.4 points and 7.8 rebounds per game for the Flying Dutchmen. In his junior season he contributed 6.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per outing and in his sophomore year he averaged 11.9 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. His career averages were 10.2 points and 7.1 rebounds per contest.
In addition to playing for Coach van Breda Kolff, Laux spent four seasons as an assistant coach under "Butch". He concluded his tenure as an assistant coach in 1992.
Prior to his coaching stint at Hofstra, Laux compiled nearly 30 years teaching and coaching at Elmont High School. He totaled 295 wins as a coach at Elmont.
Laux also earned his master's degree from Hofstra in 1970.
