Hofstra Wins Three Championships, Place Eight At New York State Championships

Garden City, NY - Hofstra wrestlers placed in eight weight classes with three winning championships at the 2024 New York State Collegiate Championships hosted by Nassau Community College Saturday. Two of the eight place-winners - Greyson Harris and Adrian Sans - wrestled attached, while the other six - Frank Volpe, Danny Church, Cam Ice, Dylan Zenion, Joe Russo, and Gavin Proffitt - competed unattached.

All three champions - Harris, Volpe, and Church - wrestled in the freshman/sophomore division, Russo was the only placewinner to compete in the open division as he finished fifth at 165 pounds.

Harris won three consecutive matches by tech fall before a narrow 8-7 decision over Ithaca's Brian Bienus in the 165 pound final. Harris led 6-2 going into the third period before Bienus scored a four-point near fall to tie the score. Harris got a reversal with 22 seconds to go to take the lead with Bienus earning a point on a stalling call in the final seconds to account for the final.

Volpe cruised to the finals at 157 pounds with wins by fall, major decision, and decision. In the championship match he trailed Niagara County Community College's Kace Cook 4-2 in the third period before scoring a takedown with 29 seconds remaining to get the 5-4 victory.

Church had a bye in his round of 16 match at 285 pounds and then picked up a 36 second fall in the quarterfinals. He edged his Hofstra teammate Sans in the semifinals, 8-6, and then notched another fall in the championship match, downing Oneonta State's Kenny Jackson in 2:13.

Sans would place third at 285 with a win by fall over Kevin Arriaza of Oswego State in 1:32. Ice would place second at 141 pounds, dropping a 5-2 decision in sudden victory in the final. Zenion was the runner-up at 149 pounds, while Russo was fifth at 165 pounds with all four of his victories coming by fall. Proffitt won his first three matches by fall before getting tripped up in the finals at 197 pounds.

Hofstra returns to action Sunday at 3 p.m. with an Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association match at Franklin and Marshall.

-Harris' tech fall victories were the first of his career
-Eric Shindel also competed as an attached wrestler and went 2-2 at 165 pounds in the open division.
-Michael Leandrou competed unattached at 165 pounds and went 3-1.
-Matthew Waddell was unattached at 174 pounds and went 2-2.
