Boston, MA -
Tyler Thomas poured in 32 points, including 26 in the second half, but the Pride was unable to put the finishing touches on an incredible comeback as the Hofstra men's basketball team dropped a 71-68 decision to Northeastern at Matthews Arena on Thursday evening.
Thomas was 9-16 from the field in the final 20 minutes and hit five three-pointers in the second stanza to help the Pride rally from a 19-point halftime deficit.
The loss drops Hofstra's overall record to 8-8 and 1-2 in CAA play. Northeastern is now 6-10 and 1-2 in the league.
It was all Northeastern in the final six minutes of the first half as following a three-pointer from
Jaquan Carlos with 6:03 left, the Huskies scored the game's next 17 points to lead 42-21 with 39 seconds left.
An inspired Hofstra team came out of the locker room after halftime. The Pride wasted no time in closing the gap to seven as they used a 14-2 run to open the half to make it a seven-point game, 44-37, with 15:32 left.
Another big run for the Pride ensued after Northeastern made it 47-37 as Hofstra tacked on a 17-6 run to stunningly take a 54-53 lead following a three-point play from Thomas with 8:57 left.
Northeastern was able to push the lead back to four on a pair of occasions over the next few minutes but Thomas put the Pride back in front with 2:33 left at 65-64. A pair of Huskie free throws and a three-pointer by the home squad pushed the lead to four before Thomas answered and made it 69-68 with 1:22 to play. That would be as close as the Pride could get down the stretch, though, as Hofstra turned the ball over on its ensuing possession and Northeastern added a pair of free throws. A last ditch effort by Hofstra in the waning seconds was off the mark to give Northeastern the win.
Carlos added 13 points for Hofstra, which also got 10 points and six rebounds from
Darlinstone Dubar.
Luka Sakota posted 19 points for Northeastern, while Joe Pridgen added 12 points and seven rebounds.
Hofstra continues its unique CAA road trip on Saturday when it makes its first-ever visit to Campbell for a 2 p.m. game.
